Bone Density - DEXA

Bone Densitometry Scanning, also called DEXA is an enhanced X-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. Bone Density is established standard for measuring bone mineral BMD.

Bone Density is a medical test that is painless test and helps physicians treat medical conditions. This test involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce images of the inside of the body. Bone Density is often performed on the lower spine and hips.

Bone Density is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, causing the bones to become thinner and more fragile, likely to break.

Common Uses or Individuals at risk:

Post menopausal women
Have a personal or maternal history of hip fractures or smoking
A man with clinical conditions associated with bone loss
Use of medications that cause bone loss
Type 1 juvenile or insulin dependent diabetes
Liver, kidney disease or family history of osteoporosis
Thyroid condition hyperthyroidism or hyperparathyroidism
Vertebral fracture or other signs of osteoporosis
